Accessibility & Session Rates
Economic Justice Through Mutual Aid
At Embodied Journeys, our commitment to justice extends beyond the therapy room—and that includes how we approach access to care. We believe healing is a right, not a privilege, and that access to high-quality mental health care shouldn't be limited by insurance coverage, income level, or systemic barriers.
Because access to money and resources isn’t just about budgeting or working hard, it’s shaped by things like systemic injustice, generational wealth, and built by the privileged few, we ground our approach in the principles of economic justice and mutual aid. These values shape how we offer care, how we structure session rates, and how we strive to create a practice that fosters and promotes equity, sustainability, and collective responsibility.
WHAT IS ECONOMIC JUSTICE?
A framework that emphasizes fairness in how resources and opportunities are distributed, with the goal of ensuring that all people—regardless of background or identity—can experience well-being and participate fully in society. Economic justice recognizes that current systems create advantage for some and disadvantage for others, and calls for actively correcting that imbalance.
WHAT IS MUTUAL AID?
A community-based practice of reciprocal care where people share resources, services, or support in response to shared needs. Rooted in solidarity (not charity), mutual aid says: we take care of each other. It honors both our interdependence and our individual dignity, trusting that everyone has something to offer and everyone deserves to be supported.
Creating a more accessible, inclusive model of mental health care requires community and cooperation.
We can’t do it Alone!
We Follow Our Own Path
After accepting insurance for a decade, Embodied Journeys founder, Jackie Abeling, made the conscious choice to not to contract with insurance companies when we opened our doors in 2021. That decision isn’t a judgment on those who wish to use their insurance, nor on providers who accept it. Under this system, most of us, clients and clinicians alike, are just trying to get by.
Nonetheless, we continually find that traditional insurance-based care often creates more barriers than it removes. It asks people to prove they’re struggling enough, limits the kind of care that’s covered, and tends to serve those with the most privilege.
We believe there’s a better way that allows for greater flexibility, more relational care, and a model rooted in justice, not gatekeeping.
While we acknowledge it’s not perfect, it’s a step toward something more sustainable—for you, for us, and for the community we’re building together!
Our Support-Based Model
To help make therapy more accessible while still supporting sustainability, we use a support-based rate system inspired by the Green Bottle Method (originally developed by Alexis J. Cunningfolk). This framework invites each person to reflect on their current access to resources and choose the rate that feels most aligned and sustainable for them.
This isn’t a sliding scale in the traditional sense. It’s not about proving hardship or “qualifying” for care. It’s about community trust, mutual responsibility, and economic honesty. It’s an approach rooted in solidarity, not charity.
We offer three options, each reflects a different level of access to financial resources. We trust you to choose the rate that is honest and sustainable for where you are right now, and reevaluate when your financial circumstances change—for better or worse. Your choice supports not just your care, but the care of others in our community, too.
